From composition to strategy - sustainable visions for the residential project

Abstract

Protecting natural resources and minimizing the use of fossil energy led the debate on housing and sustainable environment to the idea of densification of existing urban fabrics. Faced with this vision, architecture develops new methods for handling and rewriting the data extracted from the site and the program, transforming the constraints in strategies for a quality project. The project becomes an "operating system", a code base able to evolve and transform itself as result of specific inputs. Form is no longer a complete and definitive result of a meticulous compositional thinking but one combination from a range of possible options, a "moment" in a process that is theoretically open in time. We talk about the rejection of composition and the search for strategies that are open systems, supported by the projectural devices, capable of favoring dynamic processes.
