ArgumentNo. 4/2012

Types of interventions on historical buildings

Abstract

Through a slow but sure process, Bucharest may lose important, valuable buildings. We do not have in mind only the buildings having historic value, but also those having architectural and environmental value.

Valuable buildings have been downgraded in order to be demolished by local or foreign investors, whilst other buildings or entire areas of little architectural or historical value have been maintained, fact which has a negative impact on the correct development of the town.

The architectural conservation of a historical building is a complex process: first, because the edifice should be standing and secure for a long time from now on; secondly, in terms of economy, it must be functional and used at maximum capacity, then, it must be resistant to the effects of the climate and, finally, it requires the cooperation of an entire team of professionals.
