Abstract

Architecture is, par excellance, both art and a science, perhaps among the few fields with such a profound impact on the intimate structure of a society. But with the assertion of the agentive role of objects and the dialectical process of mutual human-thing and thing-human construction, research on the site and dwelling must prioritize an interdisciplinary approach, in which the human relationship with the environment occupies a central position. Through recent studies of social ecology, this article aims, in the first part, to open a broader discussion on the need to reconfigure the built space through a multilateral approach, which takes into account not only place but also dwelling. Starting from the premise that man makes the place as much as the place makes the man, an interdisciplinary approach is key to solving this need to renegotiate the relationship between social and materiality by proposing research path and methodology inspired by anthropology and a common language. The second part adds to the discussion of the new realities configured by the regulations on physical distance imposed by COVID-19 and opens a dialogue on the possibility of introducing new technologies (AR, VR, AI) and extent of valorize multisensory as methods of interaction with built space.
